The third Suigetsu master and what could be called his
representative technique, the sandblasting, are able to give birth to various
patterns. If the purple clay’s surface is scraped lightly it becomes dark
black, and if scraped deeply it becomes gray. The patterns presented by the
contrast of these three colors are both refined and elegant, fascinating those
who see them.
Morie is a traditional technique that has been passed down from generations
in Yokkaichi’s banko-yaki, and consists of opaque coloured painting that cannot
be found in other pottery producing areas. Morie, with its high-quality image
arrangement, is a refined art, and the combination of its colours is gentle and
spectacular. It is Suigetsu’s and Kishiyo’s artistic masterpiece, which embodies
two hundred years of history in its flower paintings, and perfected with a
contemporary Japanese-style modernism.
