It has been said from ancient times that purple clay teapots are able
to serve the most flavoursome tea in all Japan. The more they are used,
the more familiarly they can be raised into fine teapots.
Process to make KYUSU(Teapot)
<1> Water shaping
Every body, handle, mouth, lids and othe parts are produced by potter's
wheel. The body is shaped using water while spinning yhe potter's wheel.
<2> Tea Strainer
The tea strainers are completely handmade and produced by adding a little
bit of glaze to its body. One tea strainer has approximately 300 holes
in it
<3> Drying Process
While the clay still has not dried
completely, the tea strainer, handle and mouth are connected to the body of the
teapot. Once its shape has been completed, the teapot is thoroughly dried.
<4> Lighting the Kiln
The purple clay, which does not
require glazing, can be completed by baking it only once. The baking process
takes 30 hours and a temperature of 1,170 degrees Celsius.
<5> Finishing Process
The teapot is taken out of the
kiln, rubbed with the corresponding lid, and by buffer wheel or other means,
polished.
